What is Neuromodulation?

Neuromodulation is the use of some means of altering the function of the nervous system to restore body functions to areas that aren’t operating properly. A classic example within the medical device realm would be the pacemaker used to regulate cardiac rhythm and function. Another would be deep brain stimulation for conditions like Parkinson's disease. The most common forms of neuromodulation are invasive and require some sort of surgical procedure to implant a device which helps to regulate the deficient area of the nervous system.

However, it is also possible through certain techniques or methods to accomplish non-invasive neuromodulation. Some techniques that have had success in accomplishing this include: Vagus nerve stimulation via electrical stimulation, magnetic transcranial stimulation, acupuncture, etc.

Chiropractic neurology is the specialty of diagnosing and treating conditions of the brain and nervous system through various non-invasive techniques which help achieve neuromodulation. The non-invasive techniques listed above along with various exercises to re-train injured or damaged nerves have proven successful in achieving neuromodulation without the need for surgical procedures or implanted devices.
