What Is Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy And How Can It Help You?

Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is a breakthrough development in healthcare. While it’s been around for more than 40 years, it has only recently become more commonly used by healthcare professionals as newer research has proven its beneficial uses. The FDA first approved PEMF therapy in 1979 for the healing of non-union fractures. More recently it has also been approved for the treatment of depression, anxiety, urinary incontinence, muscle stimulation and even cancer, as the FDA approved it for brain cancer in 2011.

PEMF therapy works by stimulating the magnetic fields within the body. All of the cells in the human body have a natural magnetic field based on the ions and electrolytes within the body. The voltage of a healthy cell is about -20 to -25 millivolts. We start to get sick when that voltage drops below -15 millivolts. Once our cells’ voltage drops below that level they are unable to heal and become dysfunctional. PEMF sends energy waves into the body’s natural magnetic field and can actually enhance the healing response of damaged tissues. It does so by increasing the motion of electrolytes and ions in the tissues and fluids of the body, which in turn causes a wide range of chemical, mechanical, and electrical actions in the tissue and restores the proper voltage.

Another way to think about this would be to imagine all the cells in your body as batteries. Daily stressors drain them of the energy they need to function optimally. Tissue damage from both acute and chronic injuries or conditions will also deplete this cellular energy. That’s where PEMF therapy comes in. PEMF generates energy at the cellular level without the use of medically invasive procedures. This amplification of natural energy encourages the body to function more effectively for overall wellness and addresses dysfunction where it starts — at the cellular level!

PEMF therapy can be used to treat a wide assortment of musculoskeletal injuries or chronic conditions. Different attachments on the machine allow for the option of either a specific area of focus to treat conditions such as joint arthritis, ligament tears, torn cartilage, tendonitis, or even fractures; or a more broad area of treatment with benefits including general relaxation and calming of anxiety, urinary incontinence, constipation, and chronic fatigue to name a few.

The great thing about PEMF therapy is that it is safe for use on people of all ages and varying degrees of health. The treatment protocol can be adjusted to meet the specific needs of each individual patient and the therapy itself is administered to the patient’s level of comfortability with the unique sensation involved with the treatment. Generally speaking the therapy is meant to be felt by the patient at the highest possible level that is tolerable to them without feeling any pain or discomfort during the session. It is experienced as a gentle ‘tapping’ sensation felt within the targeted area of the body. The sensation can be varied in both intensity and frequency depending on the intended form of treatment.
